BCS Volunteers Spring into Action for Brooklyn

In April, BCS held its annual volunteer engagement initiative, Spring into Action! Over the course of two weeks, more than sixty volunteers from nearly twenty different organizations helped out at BCS programs across the borough.

BCS serves over 20,000 Brooklynites annually, at twenty-eight program sites across the Brooklyn borough. From career guidance for rising graduates to art therapy for residents living with mental illness, Spring into Action allows everyone to get involved. We work hard to foster a collaborative environment that allows volunteers to form meaningful connections, give back to Brooklyn, and work side by side with hundreds of BCS clients.

This year, BCS Volunteers…

…Planted flowers with residents of Henry Street supportive housing! The garden serves as a safe space for housing insecure Brooklynites looking to get back on their feet. Thank you to NYU Tandon for sending students to tend the backyard garden!

…Beautified a Coney Island beach! Members of UniSocial Church and residents of BCS’ Sea Rise Supportive Housing Program collected trash for hours along the shore of their local beach.

…Led a Brooklyn-themed painting workshop! Volunteers guided clients at BCS’ day programs for adults living with disabilities as they painted canvases of the Brooklyn Bridge.

….Painted faces (and hands) at Prospect Plaza Community Center! Volunteers welcomed Brownsville families into the center for an afternoon of barbecue, basketball, yard games, art, and more.

…Quilted with residents of Cortelyou supportive housing! Volunteers and residents collaborated to create a quilt that represents the diversity and strength of the LGBTQ+ community.

… Restored dignity at the BCS Shower Bus! Teens and young adults from Repair the World Brooklyn welcomed clients aboard the mobile care unit at a BCS-hosted Health Fair in Brownsville, Brooklyn. The fair gathered local, community-based organizations to provide healthcare and hygiene resources for the neighborhood.

Thank you to NYU Tandon, Long Island University, Max Mara USA, Unisocial Church, St. Michaels Church, Starbucks, Repair the World Brooklyn, Express Locks, 75th and 73rd Precincts Community Affairs, MetroPlusHealth, Protecting the East, Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation, Job Corps, Standup Wireless, Hands on Health, Riseboro, Essential Beauty, and Power of Two for joining the Spring into Action Movement!
