BCS Junior Board

What Is the BCS Junior Board and What Does It Do?

The Brooklyn Community Services Junior Board is a group of dedicated young professionals who help BCS "create a better Brooklyn" by assisting in three core areas:

  • Volunteer Projects: Junior Board members organize volunteer projects that assist BCS programs and clients.
  • Fundraising: Junior Board members help bring in resources that support BCS's critical social service programs by:purchasing and selling tickets to agency events; organizing fundraising activities; and making personal contributions to the organization.
  • Ambassadorship: Junior Board members serve as "BCS Ambassadors" at BCS and community events and spreading the word about BCS's work to their friends and associates.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Attendance at Monthly Meetings: The Junior Board meets once a month, usually on the first Thursday of the month, from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. at BCS headquarters.  Pizza and beer are served starting at 6:00 p.m. for anyone who can come earlier to eat and socialize.  Junior Board members are expected to attend a minimum of 75% (8 out of 12 meetings) throughout the year.
  • Participation in Junior Board Projects:  The Junior Board will select activities and events for which the group is interested in playing a leadership role.  Such activities may include special fundraising projects, volunteer projects, or visibility efforts in the community.  A schedule of Junior Board activities for the year will be determined and voted on by the Junior Board as a group, in consultation with BCS staff.
  • Participation in BCS Fundraising and Visibility Events:  Junior Board members are great "BCS Ambassadors" who can help BCS spread the word about the critical work we do to help create a better Brooklyn. While each Junior Board member is not expected to attend every BCS event, we hope to have Junior Board representation at most of our important events (i.e., Anniversary Celebration, Fun Walk,Notes from Brooklyn, special 360 events, Volunteer Recognition Event, other).
  • Financial Support: Junior Board member is expected to contribute and/or raise a minimum of $250 per year.  This "give and get" can be accomplished individually, or collectively (i.e., if there are ten Junior Board members, the JB might elect to try and raise $2,500 as a group through an event or a fundraising appeal to friends and family)."

  • Committee Work: Junior Board members are invited, but not required, to serve as a member of a selected BCS Board Committee.  Currently there are openings on the following committees: Volunteer, Development, Marketing and Communications, and Legislative Affairs.
