BCS Board of Directors Announces New Executive

The Board of Directors of Brooklyn Community Services (BCS) is pleased to announce that Marla G. Simpson has been appointed Executive Director effective April 16, 2012.

Ms. Simpson began working as a senior member of the Bloomberg Administration in 2003 as Chief Procurement Officer and Director of the Mayor's Office of Contract Services (MOCS), the agency charged with managing the City's essential purchases spanning all areas of public works from major capital construction to nonprofit, community service programs.

As chief executive of MOCS, Ms. Simpson provides policy and oversight responsibility for a $15 billion annual portfolio, and transformed the agency into a center of innovation, customer service and public accountability.  She has partnered with commissioners across City agencies, human services providers, business groups, civic organizations and unions to promote better contract practices, enhance oversight, and improve service delivery.

Prior to MOCS, Ms. Simpson served as Section Chief in the Charities Bureau of the Office of the New York State Attorney General, Director of Government & Community Relations for Brooklyn College, Counsel, Operations and Planning Director for the Manhattan Borough President, and Project Director for the New York Lawyers for Public Interest.  Ms. Simpson earned her law degree from the University of Michigan and her undergraduate degree from Michigan State University.

BCS is proud that Ms. Simpson will be leading BCS.  She brings over 25 years of experience in human services with government agencies and nonprofit organizations, and a deep commitment to Brooklyn.  We are confident that BCS will continue to be Brooklyn's premier social service agency, and that we will continue to identify new opportunities to serve the residents of Brooklyn.

The Board of Directors and staff are deeply grateful to Barry Newmark, Director of Administrative Services, who served as the Interim Executive Director.  His unwavering commitment, leadership and outstanding service to BCS are inspiring.  The Board is also grateful to the dedication and passion of our entire staff, whose efforts each and every day provides a positive impact on the lives of those we serve.

Wall Street Journal "Donor of the Day" features
BCS Honorary Board Member Steven Klinsky

"Steven B. Klinsky believes that education doesn't end with the school day.  The 55-year-old founder and chief executive of New Mountain Capital, set out nearly 20 years ago to create an after-school educational program for children attending public school. He did so in honor of his older brother, Gary, who died in 1978.  Gary, who was seven years older, would tutor Mr. Klinsky as a child every day. The two would do workbook drills and read together. "He was a huge, positive influence in my own life and education," he says. And so when Mr. Klinsky reached adulthood and wanted to give back, he decided to do something in early childhood education."

Fradel

"When you hear the word "Brooklyn," the first thing you think of is the image of the Brooklyn Bridge. But there is an older and more venerable organization than the famous bridge –Brooklyn Community Services (BCS). Founded in 1866, BCS helps children and families through many social service programs including job training and placement, support for persons with mental health issues and physical disabilities, homemaker services, and family day care.  Giving back to the community is what BCS is all about and World Financial Group's (WFG) EMD Fradel Barber wanted to be a part of that – by volunteering her time and services.  For her efforts this WFG associate is being honored at this non-profit's 145th anniversary celebration on May 19, 2011."
