Residential Habilitation Trainer (per diem)

Residential Habilitation teaches independent living skills to developmentally disabled adults living with their families or in their own homes.

Responsibilities:

Direct Care Specialist

Individual Residental Supportive Housing

Per Diem, On-Call (daytime, evening, overnight, and weekend shifts)

Our Supportive Housing Program, located in Bedford Stuyvesant, provides 12 studio apartments to adults with developmental disabilities and helps residents live a full and integrated life in the community. Staff assist residents cultivate the skills needed for independent living. 

Responsibilities:

  • Provide individual instruction and planning as per individual needs; follow and implement Habilitation Plans
  • Escort individuals to and from medical appointments
  • Write daily notes for individuals that meet OMRDD and Medicaid guidelines

Requirements:
BA required; Human Services field preferred. Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills are required. AMAP (Approved Medication Administration Personnel Certificate required); CPR; and First Aid Training are required. NY State valid driver's license preferred. Director of Education Programs
                                        

The Director of Education Programs provides overall vision, leadership and program management for BCS's programs that serve school-age young people.   BCS's Gary Klinsky Children's Centers (GKCC) provide after-school learning opportunities for over 650 children each year, through funding provided by the NYC Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD), as well as foundations and generous private donors.  GKCC operates every weekday from 3:00 - 6:00 p.m. at four public elementary schools located in East New York, Crown Heights and Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn.   BCS also partners with the NYC Department of Education (DOE) to offer a Learning to Work Program at the Brooklyn High School for Leadership and Community Service.  Brooklyn Leadership is a small, academically rigorous, full-time DOE Transfer High School designed to re-engage high school students who are over-age and under-credited or who have dropped out of school.   The BCS Learning to Work Program offers additional academic support, career and education exploration, work preparation, skills development, and internships. 

 The Director of Education is accountable for program budgets totaling $2M, manages the relationships with program funders and ensures compliance with all funding source expectations, including enrollment, attendance, and data collection and analysis to document outcomes of BCS's educational programs, particularly academic achievement.  The Director promotes collaboration between all educational programs, and works closely with fellow BCS program directors to ensure cross-program collaboration at all levels.  The Director also works closely with the External Relations and Advancement department to market and promote BCS educational programs, raise additional public and private support for BCS educational programs and engage volunteer resources to assist BCS educational programs.  In addition to these and other as-needed responsibilities, the Director's specific program responsibilities include:

 Gary Klinsky Children's Centers

  • Supervise and administer 4 GKCC sites.  Provide direct supervision to the four site directors and literacy trainer.  
  • Ensure that site directors build and maintain strong relationships with all stakeholders, including school principals, teachers and parents.
  • Ensure that each afterschool site effectively implements the BCS curriculum. 
  • Develop staff training plan for afterschool site directors, ensure provision of training to classroom staff.
  • Administer all components of the afterschool programs, including fiscal, contractual and program services. 
  • Ensure full and timely reporting to and information exchange with school staff, funders and agency executives, and communicate effectively with GKCC participants' parents and guardians.

 Brooklyn High School for Leadership and Community Service

  • Sustain positive working relationships with DOE staff including the Principal and Assistant Principal at the school.
  • Supervise the BCS Learning to Work Program Director; develop staff training plan and ensure staff development, and ensure that the program operates in conformity with best principles of youth development.
  • Administer all components of the Learning to Work program, including fiscal, contractual and program services. 
  • Ensure full and timely reporting to and information exchange with school staff, funders and agency executives, and communicate effectively with Brooklyn Leadership students, alumni, parents and guardians.

 Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Education, Social Work, or related field; LMSW and/or direct teaching experience preferred.
  • Minimum of six years of experience in school-based and/or afterschool programs, including minimum of three years supervising staff and developing/managing programs; experience with co-located programs preferred.
  • Strong organizational, analytical and problem solving, relationship building, and oral and written communication skills; experience with grant-writing and funder relationships preferred.
  • Fingerprinting and criminal background check required.

Gary klinsky Children's Center - Site Director

Gary Klinsky Children's Centers (GKCC) provide after-school learning opportunities to children from low-income families, who attend some of New York City's lowest performing public elementary schools.  The GKCC program is offered every weekday from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. at four public elementary schools located in East New York, Crown Heights, and Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn.  The four GKCC centers serve over 650 elementary school children annually.

 Responsibilities:

  • Direct and lead day to day operations of a school-based after school program at PS 306 located in East New York, Brooklyn.
  • Ensure consistent implementation of the thematic curriculum.
  • Supervise teachers, assistant teachers, and other staff.
  • Plan and implement clubs and field trips.
  • Represent BCS and GKCC to the school principal and other school staff.  Participate in school leadership team.  Meet monthly with principal or principal's designee to exchange information and cooperate in problem solving.  
  • Communicate with principal to ensure principal is fully aware of activities and issues in the program.
  • Plan and implement events to encourage parental involvement in program.
  • Manage and maintain student and staff files.
  • Coordinate enrollment process for students, and maintain and communicate attendance information for students and staff.

 Requirements:

Creative Arts Therapist

Program:   TLC (Transitional Living Community )
Reports to: Program Director

BCS's Transitional Living Community is a 40 bed section of the Brooklyn Women's Shelter in East New York, Brooklyn. TLC provides homeless, low-income, mentally ill women with temporary shelter and assistance to secure permanent housing. TLC recruits its clients primarily from the assessment unit of the Brooklyn Women's Shelter. Staff conduct comprehensive assessments to identify women with severe and persistent mental illness, many also having serious personal, social, medical and economic problems. A principle feature of the TLC program is the "milieu treatment" in which women are helped to practice the skills they will need to live successfully outside the shelter system, including pre-vocational preparation.

Responsibilities
Provide group and individual therapy which facilitates insight or behavioral change and supports residents' progress toward health and housing.

Assess clients, and determine goals for appropriate methods of treatment within the context of TLC's purpose of attaining mental health stability and obtaining housing.

Create and maintain relevant group structures, milieu activities, trips, and projects to encourage client participation in the therapeutic and housing process and to foster a sense of community and support.

Serve as a member of an interdisciplinary team to include participation in client treatment planning, weekly case conference, and staff meetings.

Write progress notes which document the types of activities in which client participates, patterns of attendance, interpersonal behavior, response to modalities, and progress towards goals. Maintain Daily Activity Sheets and Client Activity Records.

Educate other staff about the rationale, methodology, and goals of Art Therapy, through in-services, informal contacts and role modeling.

Perform other duties as assigned by Program Director.

Requirements
Masters in Creative Arts Therapy required; ATR-BC and LCAT required. Experience working with mentally ill and/or homeless populations preferred.

Staff Generalist - Food Service/Maintenance Unit
Program: East New York Clubhouse
Reports to: Program Director

The East New York Clubhouse provides a safe, nurturing, non-institutional settings for psychiatric rehabilitation which fosters independent living and greater participation in the community. Clubhouse members play an active role in their own rehabilitation as they participate in the day-to-day operation of the Clubhouses—processing intake of new members, providing Clubhouse tours for visitors, reaching out to new members, and setting Clubhouse policies.  Members also enroll in training programs and develop job skills through transitional employment in local area businesses.

 Responsibilities:

  • Work with members around food preparation, maintenance, and recreational socialization, with a primary focus in the kitchen and maintenance areas.
  • Generate member interest in participation in the work ordered day.
  • Maintain an active caseload and provide extensive case management.
  • Document activities in progress notes.
  • Provide leadership with clubhouse members in relationship to the mission and goals of the Clubhouse.
  • Maintain enthusiasm, commitment and belief in the clubhouse model.
  • Help members to identify and use community resources that promote their well-beingm independence, satifaction and self-sufficiency.  

                                            
Requirements: HS diploma and minimum of one year experience with mentally ill adults required.  AA degree preferred.  Position requires daytime, evening, Saturday and occasional holiday hours. This position requires fingerprinting and a criminal background check.

Horticultural Specialist/Event Coordinator (per diem, up to 20 hours a week, March-November annually)

Program:     TLC (Transitional Living Community)

Brooklyn Community Services (BCS) is one of Brooklyn's oldest and largest non-sectarian social services agencies. BCS, which presently serves more than 10,000 individuals annually, is committed to a broad and diverse range of services including prevention of foster care placement; crisis intervention; early childhood and after school education; and vocational training, job placement, and clinical services to adults with physical and developmental disabilities, and histories of mental illness. 

 BCS's Transitional Living Community (TLC), a 40 bed section of the Brooklyn Women's Shelter in East New York, Brooklyn, was established in 1989. TLC provides homeless, low-income, mentally ill women with temporary shelter and assistance to secure permanent housing. A principle feature of the TLC program is the "milieu treatment" in which women are helped to practice the skills they will need to live successfully outside the shelter system, including pre-vocational preparation. TLC manages a NYC community garden located just a block away from TLC, which is used by TLC clients as well as the greater East New York community.

 Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the development, maintenance and expansion of the TLC Garden, including all aesthetic and practical components of the outdoor space.  Engage clients in the development of the TLC Garden, but retain bottom line accountability for ensuring the garden maintenance and growth is achieved.
  • Encourage the garden's use by the TLC clients as well as the greater local community. 
  • Plan garden events for the TLC clients and the community at large, including holiday and other celebrations.   Work collaboratively with the Creative Arts Therapist and TLC residents in planning the events.
  • Ensure that the garden is open to the community 10 hours per week as per BCS's commitment to the New York City Parks Department, and provide appropriate supervision during that time period.
  • Ensure maintenance of weekly garden activity log including client participation; maintain chart of expenditures; reconcile petty cash expenditures; plan purchases needed for projects and communicate needs to Program Director.
  • Build and maintain relationships with individuals and organizations that strengthen TLC/BCS presence in the community Perform community outreach and serve as a liaison to Brooklyn Botanical Gardens, East New York Farms, and Green Thumb.
  • Serve as a member of a TLC interdisciplinary team and work with all TLC treatment staff to facilitate placement related goals; participate in TLC staff meetings.
  • Facilitate at least one group with TLC clients per week.
  • Identify organizations and events that would be therapeutic for clients and escort them on such outings.
  • Supervise and train individual and groups of volunteers in work in the garden.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Program Director.

 Requirements:

Gardening experience required; community gardening experience a plus. AA or BA degree preferred, high school diploma required.  Minimum of one year experience working with homeless and/or individuals with disabilities required.  Experience managing groups of volunteers a plus. Strong communication skills needed to work with clients, community members, funders, and garden visitors. Occasional weekend hours required. Criminal background check and fingerprinting required.

Director, Learning to Work Program at Brooklyn HS for 
                   Leadership and Community Service

Reports to:    Director, Education Services

Job Summary:

The Program Director leads the 12-month BCS Transfer High School program in partnership with the Department of Education (DOE) to promote the education and leadership goals of the students through the comprehensive services provided. The students are over age and under-credited for grade.

 Responsibilities:

  •  Work collaboratively with the Principal of the transfer school to provide supports and services to students to ensure their successful engagement in a rigorous educational program leading to a high school diploma.  Areas of joint work will include: ensuring close coordination between the educational and agency staff in supporting students; planning joint staff meetings and joint professional development; joint planning of program activities to build the school community and develop a climate of high expectations and support.
  • Lead efforts to reach out to students and engage them in the program, ensuring high levels of attendance at school.  Monitor and support the increase of credit accumulation for students.

Measure outreach efforts and their success.

  • Supervise team of six Advocacy Counselors and Internship Coordinator.  Monitor and assess student attendance.  Ensure that Advocacy Counselors engage students and facilitate regular attendance; provide regular counseling to students; and lead bi-weekly advisories for students.  Supervise two MSW interns.
  • Use data from Power Schools to review and analyze Advocacy Counselors' documentation and activity.
  • Train staff in principles of youth development and solution-focused work.  Ensure that staff are trained and equipped to reach out effectively to students.
  • Ensure full enrollment at the high school.  Monitor intake process and outreach to prospective students. 
  • Collaborate with Assistant Principal and Guidance Counselor to plan and schedule classes for students and daily activities.
  • Develop initiatives to engage parents and/or significant adults as appropriate.
  • Work with education staff to assist students in post-secondary planning including college or careers.
  • Facilitate outreach into the community to secure job placement referrals and internships for the Learning-to-Work program participants.
  • Monitor compliance with, and meet reporting requirements for, Department of Education (DOE) Learning to Work funding.
  • Monitor program budget in compliance with the DOE Learning to Work Contract and foundation funders.
  • Implement Quality Improvement mechanisms and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 Requirements:

  • LMSW required
  • SIFI (Supervision in Field Instruction)eligible required

Chief Operating Officer (COO)

Position Summary

Brooklyn Community Services seeks a mission-driven Chief Operating Officer (COO) who will be an integral member of the Executive Staff team at BCS. The COO is responsible for managerial oversight of over 30 programs and services across 17 BCS sites in Downtown Brooklyn, Bedford Stuyvesant, Crown Heights, East New York, Fort Greene, Clinton Hill and Coney Island.  The COO is also responsible for oversight of the administrative operations of BCS, including such areas as human resources, risk-management, program siting and the potential redevelopment of existing spaces. 

 Organization Description

Brooklyn Community Services strengthens families, helps children and youth reach their full potential, and supports adults in leading productive, fulfilling lives.  Founded in 1866, we serve over 10,000 people annually, with a staff of 400. BCS has multiple and complex funding streams, with an annual operating budget of roughly $26 million.  We provide a diverse array of services, including prevention of foster care placement; crisis intervention; early childhood education, after-school education and school-based supports; and vocational training, job placement and clinical services to adults with physical and developmental disabilities and histories of mental illness.  We respond to critical community needs, such as those of low-income Coney Islanders impacted by Hurricane Sandy.  BCS is honored to be a recipient agency of the New York Times Neediest Cases Fund for over 100 years.

 Responsibilities

  •  Provide effective leadership of all BCS programs and client services.  Inspire a culture of accountability at all levels of the organization.  Implement and lead continuous quality improvement processes throughout BCS.    
  • Supervise and set quality standards for programmatic and administrative divisions at BCS.     Lead and oversee seven direct reports including: the Deputy COO who leads Human Resources, and the six directors of BCS program divisions.  These divisions span a wide array of disciplines and encompass: Early Childhood Education programs, which includes BCS's Early Learn, Head Start and Early Head Start Programs; Education & Youth programs, which includes BCS's Gary Klinsky Children's Centers (GKCC) after-school education programs at four elementary schools,  and school-based supports (Learning to Work) for Brooklyn High School for Leadership and Community Services, a transfer high school; Family Services programs, which include preventive services aimed at keeping at-risk families intact and children safe in their homes, and other case management programming; Mental Health and Wellness programs; Job Training, Rehabilitation and Employment programs for persons with disabilities; and Community Services for Adults with Developmental Disabilities.
  • Work collaboratively with Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to provide financial oversight of all program budgets. Work with direct reports to prepare program budgets and monitor revenue and expenses in real time, so as to effectively deliver services to BCS clients.  Prepare annual operating budget, as well as all necessary mid-year modifications to such budget.  Communicate regularly with CFO and other Finance staff on budget challenges.
  • Work collaboratively with General Counsel to ensure the provision of high-quality services in compliance with all funding source mandates (federal, State, City and private).   Interact with government agencies and other funders on a regular basis, particularly regarding contract/grant negotiations and performance management.
  • Work collaboratively with Executive Staff to keep BCS at the forefront of delivering high-quality services relevant to communities throughout Brooklyn.   Engage with community and consumer stakeholders to ensure that BCS responds creatively and effectively by developing programs to address changing needs in Brooklyn.
     Participate in BCS strategic planning efforts.  Monitor and ensure progress toward attainment of goals.
  • Lead and oversee management of BCS business operations, including management of the organization's insurance portfolio and efforts to explore and manage long-range real estate planning and development opportunities.  Work collaboratively with General Counsel to address employee relations issues.
  • Work collaboratively with the Chief Officer for External Relations and Advancement on reporting to funders and accessing foundation grants.  Take a leadership role in marketing and fundraising activities as a representative of BCS.   Offer guidance on financial development strategies and participate in fundraising proposals to corporations, foundations, individuals and government entities.
  • Along with the Executive Director and other Executive Staff, communicate with public and private funders, membership organizations and elected officials.   Represent BCS to appointed and elected officials as well as leaders in the corporate, philanthropic and not-for-profit sectors.   
  • Lead and participate in development of public policy agenda and advocacy strategies.  Promote BCS's visibility and impact on social service policies at all levels of government.  Develop and maintain relationships with key figures in relevant governmental and private agencies.  Manage an effective advocacy program. 
  • Provide support to the Executive Director.  Lead Cabinet meetings.  Serve as liaison to Board committees.

 Experience and Characteristics

The COO will be a mission-driven leader with a commitment to ensuring excellent services to children, families, and adults who is able to inspire staff to perform at their highest levels; a strong strategic thinker and relationship builder with excellent analytical, program management, presentation and financial planning skills; and an excellent problem solver, who is achievement-oriented and effective in driving results.

Specific qualifications and relevant experience include:

  • Minimum of eight years of senior-level leadership experience supervising seasoned staff and operating multiple services or programs.  Client services program supervisory experience a plus.
  • Proven track record of successful results in operations and financial management, preferably with a complex and/or multi-site organization.
  • Proven track record in developing metrics and in implementing program measurement and evaluation tools.
  • Strong analytic and technical skills, including experience with application of technology in service delivery and program performance monitoring.
  • Advanced degree required.

Quality Assurance Coordinator
Reports to:  MetroClub PROS Program Director

MetrocClub PROS (Personalized Recovery Oriented Services) provide safe, nurturing, non-institutional settings for psychiatric rehabilitation that foster independent living and greater participation in the community. Clubhouse members play an active role in their own rehabilitation as they participate in structured activities and groups as well as the day-to-day operation of the Clubhouse to help them explore and obtain employment, housing, education and a more active social life in the community.

 Responsibilities:

  • Supervise program staff.  This includes oversight of required documentation and weekly meetings with each supervisee.
  • Coordinate Medicaid eligibility documentation and Medicaid billing to assure full compliance with Medicaid PROS regulations
  • Manage a small caseload of approximately seven consumers, including case management such as collateral contacts, referrals, and vocational assistance, etc to coordinate services.
  • Conduct required assessments for consumers including Wellness Recovery Action Plans, Psychosocials, Psychiatric Rehabilitation, Vocational Readiness, Cultural, and Chemical Abuse or Dependence Screenings
  • Develop Individualized Recovery Plans with consumers on a semi-annual basis, or more often as needed.
  • Develop and facilitate approximately 5-6 groups, according to protocol, which will cover CRS, ORS, IR and Clinical Services as dictated by the IRPs of the program participants.
  • Conduct individual counseling sessions to assist program participants with attainment of the life-role goals specified in their Individual Recovery Plans.
  • Document consumers' progress/regression towards goals in monthly progress notes and determine the need for services offered to each participant on an ongoing basis.
  • Coordinate treatment including the sharing of Individual Recovery Plans and Progress Notes for participants who are co-enrolled with other agencies
  • Provide services according to Evidence Based Practices including Wellness Self Management, Family Psychoeducation, Medication Management, Co-occurring Disorders, and Supported Employment.
  • Coordinate follow-up services once a participant is ready for discharge from the program
  • Act as a member of an interdisciplinary treatment team, including participation in weekly administrative, clinical and utilization review meetings
    Overall responsibility for maintenance of client records, including timely documentation of services as required by Medicaid and the Office of Mental Health.
  • Develop and maintain collateral relationships with consumers' other providers and family as clinically indicated
  • Coordinate and carry a 24 hour support cell phone in rotation with the clinical team; conduct intakes as needed.
  • Assist the Program Director and Assistant Program Director with oversight of day-to-day Program activities as needed
  • Participate in or lead weekly program, clinical and utilization review meetings with interdisciplinary team

    Requirements:
    LMSW or LCSW required plus experience with mentally ill adults required.  Administrator with experience in licensed programs which bill Medicaid preferred. Recovery Specialist - Kitchen and Maintenance
Reports to:   Assistant Program Director 

MetrocClub PROS (Personalized Recovery Oriented Services) provides a safe, nurturing, non-institutional settings for psychiatric rehabilitation which  fosters independent living and greater participation in the community. Clubhouse members play an active role in their own rehabilitation as they participate in structured activities and groups as well as the day-to-day operation of the Clubhouse to help them explore and obtain employment, housing, education and a more active social life in the community.   

Responsibilities:

  • Foster an atmosphere of congeniality that facilitates the implementation of the basic philosophy of Metro Club PROS.
  • Manage a caseload of approximately 15 members, including case management such as collateral contacts, referrals, and vocational assistance to coordinate services.  
  • Document services in a comprehensive timely manner as indicated by PROS requirements.
  • Conduct required assessments including Psychosocials, Psychiatric Rehabilitation, Vocational Readiness, Cultural, and Chemical Abuse or Dependence Screenings (within 30 days)
  • Develop Individualized Recovery Plans and Wellness Recovery Action Plans in collaboration with the recipients, within the first 30 days of participation, based on the above listed assessments. Review with participants every 3 or 6 months, or as needed. Provide intensive services as needed.
  • Develop and facilitate approximately 10-14 groups per week, according to protocol, which will cover CRS Services as dictated by the IRPs of the program participants.
  • Conduct and document individual counseling sessions weekly to assist program participants with attainment of the life-role goals specified in their IRPs.
  • Document consumers' progress/regression towards goals in monthly progress notes and determine the need for addition or subtraction of services offered to each participant on an ongoing basis as required by PROS regulations.
  • Coordinate treatment including the sharing of Individual Recovery Plans and Progress Notes for participants who are co-enrolled with other agencies.
  • Provide services according to Evidence Based Practices including Wellness Self Management, Family Psychoeducation, Medication Management, Co-occurring Disorders, and Supported Employment.
  • Coordinate follow-up services once a participant is ready for discharge from the program.
  • Act as a member of an interdisciplinary treatment team, including participation in weekly administrative, clinical and utilization review meetings.
  • Overall responsibility for maintenance of client records, including consistent and timely documentation of all services provided as required by Medicaid and the Office of Mental Health.

Kitchen/Maintenance

  • Perform and oversee all food service functions including nutritious and timely meal planning and production that meets DOH and CACFP regulations.
  • Ensure successful meeting, documentation and audits of DOH and CACFP regulations. 
  • Order food and supplies; provide ongoing inventory.  Reconcile  Food and Maintenance related funds.
  • Liaise with ENYCH staff regarding work and payment for Maintenance Transitional Employment position.
  • Act as liaison with accounts regarding food and maintenance related funds, CACFP billing, payment of maintenance Transitional Employment trainee.
  • CACFP Oversight of policy, procedure and submitting monthly meal count reports for billing submission & reimbursement.
  • Actively participate in and assume bottom line responsibility for the maintenance of Metro Club PROS assuring cleanliness in the kitchen and common spaces.
  • Ensure that evening, weekend and holiday meals are adequately planned and executed.
  • Communicate with Metro Club Community and BCS maintenance personnel to assure the completion of larger maintenance tasks.

 Requirements: Bachelor's degree preferred with social work experience preferred. Criminal background check and fingerprinting required; screening against the GSA, OIG, and OMIG lists of persons disallowed from working in Medicaid funded programs.
