Speakers Bureau

About the Speakers Bureau

speakers bureau

For the past year, we've produced well-received career panels, where successful professionals volunteer their time to speak with our students about their    careers and personal stories. Now, thanks to increased volunteer support, we've built on the career panel model to create a formal Speakers Bureau.

Our students often face multiple challenges including economic stress (or poverty), familial strife, legal trouble, community violence and more. Our students really need positive, inspiring role models who they can identify with and relate to.  Accordingly, our speakers will typically be successful  professionals, businesspeople and artists who share similarities with the students, either by background, neighborhood, personal struggle, family challenge or ethnicity.

Despite their challenges, our students have a variety of interests and talents, and they're eager to learn more about the many career options open to them.  If they're able to receive this information in the context of a personal story and from speakers with whom they can identify, the message will be doubly powerful and productive.

Our goal is to enable the speakers to inspire the students to dream big, set goals, and continue working hard.  The commitment of the speakers is for a mere few hours on a single afternoon, but the positive impact on the kids can be profound and transformative.

Volunteer coordinator Steve Williamson identifies and recruits speakers and assists them through the process. If you're interested in participating – and we hope that you are – please call or email Steve at: 718-722-9300 or steve@nytrialesquire.com.
