This month, we’re honoring the women who have made a lasting impact on our community, and we couldn’t let it pass without recognizing @cmlauriecumbo.
A Brooklyn native and former NYC Commissioner of Cultural Affairs, Commissioner Cumbo has long stood at the intersection of policy, arts, and advocacy.
Her impact is felt right here at BCS, helping pave the way for the Laurie A. Cumbo Children’s Enrichment Center, supporting early childhood education for families in Downtown Brooklyn.

This week, our young Brooklynites at the Laurie A. Cumbo Children’s Enrichment Center got a nice surprise when volunteers from @popularbank stopped by to read stories, play games, and complete a fun obstacle course with them.

Showing up in the community and for the community!
Our Executive Director, Archana Jayaram, and Chief Advancement Officer, Raine Martin, spent time in Albany chatting with elected officials about issues critical to Brooklynites, such as housing, workforce development, and education. The two really enjoyed a conversation with Senator Jessica Scarcella-Spanton, who represents Coney Island!
We are grateful for the opportunity to show up in this capacity for the communities we serve and we’ll continue to strive to make sure the voices of Brooklynites are heard here at home and in the Capitol.

Behind every strong community are families doing their best to show up for one another.
At BCS, we operate more than 50 programs supporting Brooklynites in the communities they call home. One of them is the BCS Fatherhood Program.
This program helps fathers challenge the narrative and show up confidently for their families.
Through workshops, peer groups, mentorship, family engagement activities, and resource connections, fathers are building stronger relationships with their children — and with each other.
Because when fathers are supported, families thrive. 💙

Recently, our @youthstandunitedbk students had the opportunity to visit Kingsborough Community College for a private campus tour! 🎓
College tours are essentially for showing scholars what a day in their lives could look like beyond High School and what various pathways are available to them.

Meet Alex Ward, the Advocate Counselor at the Brooklyn High School for Leadership and Community Service.
In his first year, he has made significant impacts on the school community, both in the lives of students and teachers. He holds a skilled ability to connect with students, serving as a mentor and role model to many.
“When my students are long gone, I hope they remember one thing: never hold yourself back. Live life to your fullest potential and give your all in everything you do,” says Alex.
